Guinness World Records are funny and weird. They have records for everything. You’ll be interested to know that a new world record was just set for most Thai massages given in one place.
The record was broken today in Bangkok at the Thailand Medical Hub Expo 2012, where 641 masseurs massaged 641 people for 12 minutes. This smashed the previous record of 263 in Australia back in 2010.
In Thailand they call Thai massage nuat phaen boran, or “the ancient-manner massage”. According to legend, traditional Thai massage was founded 2,500 years ago by the Buddha’s own personal physician. More fact-based historians would say it developed over millennia with influences from India, China, and various regions of Southeast Asia.
Thai massage is characterized by a more energizing and rigorous experience when compared to other forms. They don’t use oils, and the person getting the massage is fully dressed, usually lying on the floor as the masseuse stretches him or her into various positions. Some people think of Thai massage as assisted yoga.
If you go on an EF College Break trip to Thailand, you should definitely consider getting a massage while you're there. I have never personally had one, so I’m not speaking from experience, but it’s definitely a nice cultural thing to do. And it might do your body some good while you’re at it.
