It seems the orangutan, named Nonja, has become something of a phenomenon on Facebook due to her photography skills. Well, maybe not skills. Really it’s her interest in the raisins that come out of the digital camera every time she snaps a photo. Whatever her motivation, her photographs are posted on her Facebook page for all the world to see. The zoo first launched the page last Tuesday, and Nonja has many admirers. Her fan count is up to 51,916 (and counting) as I’m writing this.
Nonja lives at the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna. I haven’t been to Vienna, but I enjoy a good zoo, and now there is another reason to visit this one. No word on if Nonja’s newfound celebrity has led to larger crowds at the Schönbrunn Zoo, but at least it looks like the orangutans are having a pretty good time.
Zoos, of course, are always a bit controversial. Spend a little time on Nonja’s Facebook page and you can see that some people are using it as a forum to debate the pros and cons of zoos. I won’t get into that here; this is a travel blog not a zoo-debating blog.
But the photos are pretty cool. It's nice to see what the world looks like through the accidentally creative eye of an orangutan.
